Canine bone cancer fundraiser rides again

July 21, 2004 -- Dr. Teresa Koogler, DVM, announced today that The Kate Koogler Canine ancer Fund, Inc. will be holding a fundraiser for canine cancer research. Their fundraiser, the second annual motorcycle ride, will take place September 10 - 12, 2004, and will be held in conjunction with Delmarva Bike Week in Ocean City, Md. A $50 registration fee affords participants with a host of festivities, including: dinner and a karaoke party, prizes for the riders with the most contributions, and a weekend full of beach fun.

The first annual motorcycle ride was held at Smith Mountain Lake Virginia in 2003 and was a huge success. Thanks to our sponsors and participants we were able to donate $5000.00 to animal cancer research.

"As a veterinarian, I have had to deliver the diagnosis of cancer too many ntimes. Feeling helpless as I relayed details about treatment options and statistics for survival times to my clients. When my husband and I were faced with those same decisions, we too, felt completely hopeless," reflects Dr. Koogler.

Sadly, at age 11, a form of bone cancer took Kate, Dr. Koogler`s dog, from her loving owners. "Kate enjoyed a very full life. But at 11 she still had a lot of living to do. I need to know if there is something genetic that causes this disease to affect primarily large breed dogs. I truly believe that the fact that certain breeds of dogs seem predisposed can teach us something that may be able to prevent another sweet life from being shortened”.

The Kate Koogler Canine Cancer Fund, Inc. was established to honor the memory of a very special Rottweiler named Kate, Dr. Koogler`s once in a
lifetime friend and companion. The Kate Koogler Canine Cancer Fund, Inc. is a non-profit organization 501(c) 3, whose mission is to raise funds for osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma research in hopes of finding ways to prevent and treat bone related cancers in dogs.
